EN // In Fès the daily reality has two speeds; In the medina the rhythms of tourists collide with the rhythms of the few inhabitants that still live there. The loaded mules and carts, make the way easier for tourists equipped with IPad, if they wouldn’t dodge in time, crushing themselves against the richly tiled walls of a mausoleum or a fountain. In Fès, with other words, the meeting between Europe and Africa explodes, under the cane canopies and velars covering the routes of the suk that make softer the transition from light to the Maghreb shadow.
From the travel to the workshop
The research for a new African city vision of a group of junior architects and Phd students led by me culminated in Fès. In the Lalla Yeddouna square a construction yard shows the possibility of a design project for Fes and its river, today. Tight between Chouara tanneries, releasing a strong and badly tolerable smell, and the and Karaouine mosque-university, the widening of Lalla Yeddouna facing the river has the ambition to become a new relational space, up with the Western world standard of living without forgetting the dense and porous urbanity of Africa.
During the workshop four visions will be presented to students, four different strategies to describe a new relationship between Fès and its river, in the heart of the oldest and most prestigious part of this imperial city. Four masterplans corresponding to these four visions, have been developed starting from the international architecture competition of Lalla Yeddouna Place (http://www.projectcompetition-fez.com/projects_projectcompetition-fez_home_f.htm) by the students participating to the worhshop/internship, study-voyage “Voices from Africa”. One of those will be chosen after a selection made the first day of workshop. Further details will be given at the beginning of the workshop.
The chosen masterplan will become matter of a depth architectural study during the three weeks, in particular areas chosen by the students according to the teaching staff. The opening image depicted by this short text contaminates the medina of Fes with projects and different places to provide a summary of operational suggestions; a cultural base of famous examples (analogical city, collage city and so on) to open the eye to references that carry on many issues that students can face – the relationship between building, public spaces and water, the image of the layered city, the Western modernity that was built looking to Morocco and Morocco that nowadays could be built with a reverse proces.
The workshop provides a part of group activities and a part of individual activity.
IT // A Fès la realtà quotidiana ha due velocità; nella medina i ritmi dei turisti si scontrano con i ritmi dei pochi abitanti che, ancora, davvero qui vivono. I muli carichi e i carrettini falcidiano, letteralmente, il turista con l’ipad parato innanzi, se questi non si scansa in tempo, schiacciandosi contro le pareti riccamente piastrellate di un mausoleo o di una fontana. A Fès, in altre parole, deflagra l’incontro tra Europa e Africa, sotto gli incannucciati e i velari dei percorsi del suk che rendono morbido il passaggio dalla luce all’ombra maghrebina.
Dal viaggio al progetto di workshop
A Fès culmina il viaggio alla ricerca di una nuova visione per la città africana di un gruppo di architetti junior e di dottorandi guidati dalla sottoscritta. Nella Place Lalla Yeddouna un cantiere testimonia la possibilità di un progetto per Fès e il suo fiume, oggi. Stretto tra le concerie di Chouara, emananti un intenso e mal sopportabile odore, e la moschea-università Karaouine, lo slargo della Lalla Yeddouna che prospetta sul fiume ha l’ambizione di trasformarsi in un nuovo spazio di relazione, al passo con gli standard di vivibilità occidentale senza dimenticare la densa e porosa urbanità africana.
Agli studenti del workshop Wave si proporranno quattro visioni portatrici di strategie differenti per descrivere una nuova relazione tra Fès e il suo fiume, nel cuore della parte più antica e pregiata di questa città imperiale. Delle quattro visioni, tradotte in altrettanti masterplan, messe a punto a partire dal concorso internazionale per la Place Lalla Yeddouna (http://www.projectcompetition-fez.com/projects_projectcompetition-fez_home_f.htm) dal gruppo che partecipato al viaggio studio “Le voci dall’Africa” ne verrà selezionata una, sulla base di una rapida competizione durante la giornata iniziale. Maggiori dettagli saranno dati a inizio workshop.
Il masterplan selezionato diventerà oggetto degli approfondimenti architettonici nel corso delle tre settimane, in punti particolari scelti dagli studenti in accordo con la docenza. L’immagine introduttiva che si propone con questo breve testo contamina la medina di fes con progetti e luoghi diversi per offrire una sintesi di suggestioni operative; si tratta di una tavola fatta sulla scorta di celeberrimi esempi (la città analoga, collage city e così via ) per aprire lo sguardo ad una serie di riferimenti che pongono altrettante questioni su cui gli studenti potranno ragionare – il rapporto edifici-spazi pubblici-acqua, l’immagine della città stratificata, la modernità occidentale che si è costruita guardando al marocco e il marocco che ora potrebbe costruirsi secondo un processo in un certo modo inverso.
Il lavoro nel corso del workshop prevede una parte di attività di gruppo e una parte di attività individuale.
